Mechanics

Alongside the basic mechanics of jump, dash, wall jump, etc. Every game needs its unique mechanics to stand out. If every 2D platformer you played contained the same mechanics, they would quickly become very repetitive and obsolete. The mechanics of a game can be the make or break of a game and serves an extremely important role in playability and how enjoyable the game is overall.

Advanced Mechanics

Advanced mechanics provide a game, in this case, a 2D platformer, with something no other game usually offers. 2D platformers can be solely based around an advanced mechanic, using it to navigate, battle, and collect various objects. In addition to this advanced mechanics can make a game stand out from its competitors and add something new to the industry.

Environment

The environment of a 2D platformer game is often looked over as being as important as say the player model, however the environment also plays a huge role in creating a good mood and aesthetic for a game. The environment can even be used in different ways to mix up the gameplay instead of having a basic background with basic tiles.

Ideas

For my game, I’m going to add a 3-piece environment being, overworld/surface, caves/tunnel, underworld/hell. I chose this concept as it is unique, and I haven’t seen it been done before. Also, I believe I can explore many creative features with this concept and add in a lot of newly designed ideas. The overworld may include different settings and while the tunnel may be dark in places and the underworld will stay the same. My game will take aspects from all the games I have covered in my mood boards which will be discussed within my documentation.
