Creative project w2
Introduction
This week consists of further development of the idea chosen in week 1 including mood boards, concept sketches, lore development and analysis of feedback.
Asset focused research
I produced this focused mood board in order to further develop my concept as well as to gain inspiration from existing sources. This mood board focuses on 5 main areas of the asset as seen from the numbered labels above, these areas include:
1) Inspiration from Destiny, one of my media inspirations, consisting of possible structure and animation ideas.
2) Portal designs containing various colour schemes and styles.
3) A look inside the dimension you travel through each warp.
4) Different structure concepts involving different shapes and designs.
5) Inspiration from Interstellar looking into the dimension the main character travels through.
Overall I believe this mood board does a very effective job of displaying my considerations for my asset and aiding me in the creation of my own original asset and I will continue to use this to produce my sketches and final piece.
Concept sketches
Sketch 1
This sketch was the first sketch I produced, it includes the basic factors I wanted to include such as the stairs and the additional structure pieces to ensure originality however I found this sketch too basic and moved on to produce various different sketches until I was satisfied. The dimensions of this sketch if I were to start modelling it with Maya would be around 450cm x 270 cm (L X H).
Sketch 2
The second sketch I produced was more aimed at experimenting with different ideas with the aim to find something that worked and catered well to the brief, this led me to create this sketch which will later inspire my third and final sketch. The dimensions of this sketch if I were to start modelling it with Maya would be around 450cm x 270 cm (L X H).
Sketch 3
These are my third and final sketches, I decided to experiment with a circular portal as I believe it looks a lot better and suits the portal a lot more. Now that I was pleased with the portal's structure, I began experimenting with the inner portals aesthetics taking inspiration from the existing mood board I had developed earlier. I then decided to gain some feedback on my concept pieces in order to see what concept I should proceed with. The dimensions of this sketch if I were to start modelling it with Maya would be around 450cm x 270 cm (L X H).
Concept feedback
Design 1
Design 2
Design 3
Now that I had the base of my asset designed it was time to consider additional features such as the door designs demonstrated above. To discover which of my designs I should continue producing I performed another survey and found that design 2 was the liked the most. The results for said survey are displayed below.
As you can see from these results design 2 is the clear favourite and is the door design I will use. I also discovered from performing the survey that symmetry was ideal when creating a door as well as maintaining the actual aesthetic of a door, these 2 answers will be taken into consideration whilst I produce my asset and when creating future assets.
The feedback I have gathered here is helpful as it offers insight into which concept people like best as well as giving me improvements I could make to further develop my work. From these comments, I now know that my second portal design shown below is the most liked concept which I will take into account when creating the asset itself. As for improvements, the only improvement I got was to add annotations to my mood board which has now been completed.
Concept Lore
As discussed in the brief, the asset must also include added lore/blurb in which I have complete creative freedom over, the blurb must be no more than 250 words and will include a fair amount of insight into the backstory of the asset as well as its uses and how it operates.
In the year 2095, a group of researchers set out on their everyday mission of exploring the undiscovered masses of deep space. Amongst all of the waste-filled void, a slight glow could be made out emitting from a faraway asteroid. There it was... the remnants to solving all of Earth’s biggest problems. At first, the wreckage was unclear but after much excavation, the blueprints to the otherworldly parts were discovered and titled “Dimensional Warp Gate – A Gift From Beyond”. On the researchers return from their voyage, the best scientists, and engineers from all over the globe were tasked with the construction and testing of this newly discovered warp gate. After months of intensive work, the human race had now obtained a new weapon in their arsenal, dimensional travel. The team involved had found out all they could surrounding their expertise in each field and the warp gate could now be utilised safely and effectively. They discovered
that they could use this newly discovered warp gate to obtain resources from other dimensions, this was it ... their key to the oxygen and fuel shortages devastating the modern world.
Their research and testing resulted in the following script being produced detailing the statistics and procedures involving the warp gate.
Dimensional Warp Gate – Final Log #2249
-
Inner warp portal radius of 3M
-
May transport multiple objects/personnel at any given time.
-
Dimensional travel of an unprepared object/person may result in malfunction/varied danger.
-
Warp gate can be operated by 1 person.
-
Distance travelled in relation to time is varied and unmeasurable.
-
Warp gate can only be opened for justified reasons and with the correct permission from world leaders.
-
Warp gate must maintain the correct conditions, between 10-40 degrees.
